What to see and do

Being in a pristine area which is as remote as the CKGR is, for most visitors, an end in itself. Just being able to camp, move around, and watch the wildlife at leisure in such a beautiful wilderness, with the certainty that you'll see very few other vehicles, is the real attraction here. So don't rush around looking for 'sights', as there really aren't any. Just take time to enjoy where you are!

That said, detailed here are some of the areas that you may visit, including a few notes on some of the various campsites, with their names (and booking codes). Your permit for camping in the CKGR will specify the precise campsites booked for you on each night – and these can't be changed when you're here.

If you're entering and leaving via the Matswere Scout Post then a lovely week's circuit can be made by starting around Sunday and Leopard pans, then heading north and west along Passarge Valley, south via the western link to Piper's Pan, and then returning northeast through Letiahau and Deception valleys. This is the order in which I've described these areas.
