Fauna

The variety of game in NG27 certainly seems wider to me than that found in areas further south and west – though I feel that it’s not as wide as some of the reserves on the northeast side of the Delta. Tsessebe, impala, wildebeest, lechwe, steenbok, baboon and zebra are all common and seen here very regularly. Giraffe do particularly well here, they’re very relaxed amongst the many acacia thickets, and there is a good number of resident elephants.
Lion and spotted hyena are the commonest large predators, though the mixed woodland is a perfect habitat for leopard that are numerous, though only seen occasionally. Cheetah are seen here only rarely, when the reserve is at its driest (October to March); they’re not at all common. Wild dog pass through periodically (as they do through most areas of northern Botswana) though not frequently. Both black-backed and side-striped jackal are common here.
As with most of the Delta there’s always plenty of smaller animals, too widespread to be worthy of particular comment ... though I recall a great sighting of an entertaining troop of dwarf mongooses here once!
