Chobe Safari Lodge

PO Box 10, Kasane; tel: 6250336; fax: 6250437; email: chobelodge@info.bw
Overlooking the river, on the western fringes of town, Chobe Safari Lodge was started around 1960 making it the oldest of Kasane's camps. (Just to confuse everyone, it was initially called the 'Chobe Game Lodge', and later changed its name.) It is immediately adjacent to the park, on the riverside road that used to lead to the entrance – though now this is blocked off and visitors must drive past the airport on the Ngoma road to get into the park. So whilst this is the closest lodge to the park for boat trips, it makes little difference if you're driving.

There's a wide choice of different rooms, at slightly different prices. At the top end there are 20 'river rooms' (plus two family rooms) which each have en-suite showers and toilets, air conditioning, a television and a telephone. Then there are nine simple rondavels (plus three bigger ones for families) with fans rather than air conditioning. If you are a party of four, then the family rooms are particularly good value.

The lodge has plans to build a whole new wing of about 32 'safari rooms', which it promises will be its most luxurious yet. If all goes to plan, these are due to open sometime in 2002. Meanwhile, the old established campsite by the river changes little, though has acquired a few pre-erected tents in recent years. The lodge's facilities include two bars, a swimming pool, a squash court and a volleyball court. The restaurant runs on a set-menu system, with a full breakfast for around P45, braai lunch P55 and dinner for P65.
