Crocodile Camp

(9 chalets) PO Box 46, Maun; tel: 6860265; fax: 6860793; email: crocamp@info.bw; web: www.botswana.com
Now a base for the operations of Crocodile Camp Safaris 'Croc Camp' as it's universally known is one of the old institutions of Maun. It jealously guarded a reputation for the best food in town, and used to station its own mekoro on the river beside the camp for trips into the Delta. (This used to require days of poling just to get to the buffalo fence!)

Now the camp has nine chalets of which six are brick with thatched roofs, 24-hour electricity, a fan, and slatted glass windows screened by mosquito gauze. These are quite simple, with basic locks and no frills, but they do have an en-suite shower, toilet and washbasin. All have twin beds except for the 'family' chalet that has four beds in two separate bedrooms.

The camp is often full, so you'd be wise to reserve space in advance. If necessary, there are also two older, much more basic chalets constructed of reeds, which are cheaper than the brick ones.

Croc Camp's restaurant works on a 'set menu' basis for a fixed price (P50 per person). If you want to eat here then you should let them know in advance, by either dropping in or phoning. The bar stands on decking over the river, shaded by thatch.

If you need to spend some time here then there's a pleasant, small kidney-shaped swimming pool surrounded by a grassy area with seats, ideal for kids, and shady gardens where the tree species have been thoughtfully labelled. All this overlooks the Thamalakane River, which normally first flows around July, and then dries up again around December.

Open: all year.

A short walk from the main camp is a separate campsite, set under a few shady Acacia erioloba trees. There's a separate area within this for groups with overland trucks. It was all a bit dusty and dry when I visited, but that was in October. The site has three showers each for men and women, complete with hot and cold water and hand-basins with mirrors.

Open: all year.
