Where to eat

There are a number of take-aways in the shopping mall and around the bus station which are reasonable and fairly cheap. Alternatively, there are always women selling shadza (maize porridge) and meat, and cooked maize cobs, around the vegetable market during the day.

If you're looking for somewhere more Western, Barbara's Bistro at the Sport Club (tel: 241 3737) is generally agreed to be the town's best restaurant. Its à la carte menu majors in continental cuisine, and it's open Mon–Sat 12.00–14.00 and 19.00–01.00. Alternatively, try Diggers Pub & Grill in the Village Mall (tel: 241 6055), or the Silver Spur (tel: 241 4290). Otherwise, the Marang and Thapama hotels and all have their own restaurants.

For lighter fare, try the Calabash Coffee Shop on the corner of Baines and St Patrick (tel: 240 3360), which is open Mon–Fri 07.00–17.00 and Saturday 07.00–14.00, or Tina's Coffee Shop on Blue Jacket Street (tel: 241 0472). There's also the Espresso Café (tel: 221495) which is open from 08.00 to 18.00 during the week, and until 14.00 at weekends. If you're heading out of town for the day, Sycamore Coffee House (tel: 241 4417) will provide packed lunches. There are even some fast-food outlets, including Nando's and Kentucky Fried Chicken.
