Where to stay

Most people camp near the main entrance to the caves, though there are sufficiently few visitors that you're unlikely to see anyone else here. Note that there is no water here (the nearest is at Xai Xai), or any other facilities, so it's vital that you bring everything that you need with you, and take away all of your rubbish. (Or at least everything that cannot be burned and reduced to ash.)

When using the toilet, take a spade, a box of matches and your tissue paper. Bury your waste deeply and always burn your toilet paper.

The alternative would be to visit the community at Xai Xai which is starting to get involved with tourism. You'll find more information on this at www.xaixai.org, or try to email: xaixaibw@yahoo.com (though this didn't work for me).

To get the best out of such an experience, you're probably wisest to come here with an experienced mobile safari operator who (and this is vital) knows the village and villagers well. They'll also know what's possible, and enable you to get the most out of your trip, whilst the community benefits in just the same way. Operations who may be able to help include Uncharted Africa Safaris, Phakawe Safaris or New Moon Safaris. This will be more costly than trying to do something yourself, but probably much more satisfactory.
