Aha and Gcwihaba

Over 150km southwest of the Tsodilo Hills lies an even more remote area, populated by scattered San villages and dotted with a number of hills. This is one of the most remote areas of the Kalahari, and it attracts the most experienced bush travellers simply 'because it's there'. This is expedition territory, best reserved for those who are well equipped and bush-wise.

Most go to visit the Aha Hills, which straddle the border with Namibia, and nearby Gcwihaba Hills, which contain the well-known Gcwihaba (or Drotsky's) Caverns. These are easily located, not commercialised and fascinating to visit.

In reality, though the Gcwihaba Caverns are the only cave system here that's practical for most visitors to see, there are a number of others in the area which have been unearthed by local scientists in the last few decades. The locations of these are usually kept secret to avoid visitors damaging them, or having a serious accident (which would be all too easy).
