Gunn’s Camp

Gunn’s is situated on the Boro River, overlooking Moremi Game Reserve, and was founded and run for years by the brusque Mike Gunn. It used to be accessed as often by motorboat as by plane from Maun, and in the 1980s it ran week-long ‘fitness in the wilderness’ courses which, amongst other things, taught you how to punt your own mokoro.
Since then it has been upgraded to a more upmarket camp, and in June 2002 Crocodile Camp Safaris took over its management. Now it has seven Meru tents, each with twin beds, colourful fabrics and teak furniture. All have en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and showers at the back, and a small sitting area outside with comfy chairs. The eighth room is their honeymoon chalet, which is thatched and raised up on wooden decking with a large veranda. This has a four-poster bed with mosquito net drapes. All have electric lighting run from a generator, with battery back-up.
The camp’s central dining/bar area is wood and thatch, with an excellent sitting area on the first floor, overlooking the adjacent river and its floodplains. Nearby is the camp’s small swimming pool.
Activities are organised in the morning and evening, usually involving mokoro trips and perhaps including a walk on one of the islands. If the channels are deep enough, then motor boat trips along the Boro are also possible. With prior notice, it’s also possible to take a mokoro and poler out for a whole-day trip, with a picnic lunch for a long stop on one of the islands.
