King's Pool

(10 raised chalets)
This is the Linyanti's flagship camp, the largest and most luxurious. It overlooks the Linyanti River and the swamps beyond from a position (GPS: KINGSP) in the very centre of the reserve, almost 19km northeast of Duma Tau and a similar distance from Linyanti Tented Camp.

Accommodation is in ten substantial chalets with canvas walls, all supported by raised decks and perched on the edge of a high river bank. These rooms all have private, tiled bathrooms with a hot shower, toilet and handbasin, as well as a separate outdoor shower. All have balconies overlooking Kings Pool Lagoon (a broad bend in the Linyanti River) and when I was last there a herd of elephants wandered through camp in the middle of the day for a drink below the chalets.

In the centre of the camp is a large lounge, bar and dining-room, all under thatch, whilst outside there's an open-air boma for meals under the stars. On the edge of camp there's a swimming pool and, separately, a hide for game viewing (though it's questionable if this offers better game viewing or birdwatching than is already possible from the balconies of the chalets).

Activities here are mainly on 4WD game drives and night drives. These concentrate on the riverine forest areas beside the water and, when dry, the wide grassy floodplains between the river's water and the high bank. Short walks are also possible, and when the water levels are high enough (eg: around April to August) there's a double-decker boat for gentle river cruises.

There are two small game hides in the vicinity of the camp: Inkwe Hide, which is near the river on the east side of camp, and Livingstone's Hide, which is halfway between King's Pool and Duma Tau. (Almost opposite the latter, on the other side of the river, is a colony of carmine bee-eaters.) Visitors can be dropped and collected later from these, and if you book early and request it then it's theoretically possible to sleep over in one. (Though marketed as an option, this rarely happens in practice and is not for faint-hearted visitors!)
