Khwai River & N. Gate

Near the northeastern edge of Moremi, the northernmost waterways of the Okavango gradually narrow and are spanned by a wooden pole-bridge. The tracks that run beside the river and around the floodplains here are often stunning in their beauty, and prolific in their wildlife. It's a spectacular area, and especially beautiful if approached from the dusty heartlands of Chobe during the dry season.

Orientation

It's easy to orient yourself here. The Okavango's waters approach from the west down the Khwai River. To the west they're flanked by floodplains, loops, meanders and lagoons, but gradually travelling east this valley narrows and concentrates the river water into a small channel.

Central to the whole area is the bridge at North Gate, which spans the channel. South of this is Moremi, and north is the small settlement of Khwai Village, the community-controlled concessions beyond NG18 and NG19 and the area's airstrip.

Although the lodges in this area are technically inside these concessions, I've included them in this chapter as their focus is essentially on this corner of Moremi.
