Though about an hour's drive from Francistown, this friendly lodge, run by Dale and Debbie Green, is a useful stop if you're driving to/from Zimbabwe, and has some attractions in its own right. Hence I've included a mention of it here.

To reach Modumela, take the road to Zimbabwe from Francistown for about 65km until just after the village of Tshesebe. About 5km after this you'll find a signpost to the right (east) for the village of Batale. The lodge is also signposted here (big sign), so take this right turning and follow the road for 7km to reach the lodge.

Each of the chalets here sleeps two adults and two children, and inside you'll find tea/coffee-making facilities and a cooling overhead fan. All have an en-suite bathroom with a shower, toilet and washbasin – except the honeymoon chalet, which also has a bath. There's a bar and small restaurant here, which serves a full breakfast for P46, lunch for P72 and a three-course dinner for P85.

If you have time to stop then there are quite a few activities possible in the vicinity, including rock climbing, abseiling and horse-riding trips. Game is being gradually reintroduced onto the farm, which now boasts impala, kudu, black-backed jackal, civet, steenbok, duiker, zebra, reedbuck, spring hare, scrubhare, wildebeest, eland and hartebeest – as well as ostrich and warthog which are particularly relaxed with visitors. There's also a number of cultural excursions with local villages which can also introduce you to local potters, carpenters and other craftsmen; these are best arranged in advance.
