Getting around

If you're driving yourself here then come armed with copies of both the Shell and Contimap maps of Botswana, with their wealth of GPS co-ordinates.

First you'll need to head for one of the scout camps to sign in and pay your park fees. The main game scout camp (GPS: MSCOUT) is near the Makolwane Gate, on the Nata–Maun road. The right turn to this is about 23km east of the main turning to Nxai Pans, and about 42km east of Gweta. The scout camp is less than 10km from the road. The alternative is the scout camp at Khumaga (GPS: KHUMAG), on the western side near the Boteti.

Note that if you enter the park from the east then you should follow the cut-line north to the main road, and turn left to reach the main scout camp as swiftly as possible; meandering through the park without having paid park fees first is against the rules.

Driving around you'll realise that the more southerly roads, crossing the pans, are particularly hard to locate; arguably they are simply non-existent, washed away with each year's rains. Equally, those around the centre of the eastern side of the park are so numerous that they're totally confusing; complicated by a whole network of tracks used by the camps in the area.
