Serondela campsite

(now closed, but mentioned for completeness)
For years the only site in northern Chobe was Serondela, which is about 17km west of Kasane town. It was quite a famous campsite, having sprawled along the riverside, vaguely around a set of very basic toilets and cold showers. The local animals had all lost their fear of man. Hence all the dangerous big game seemed to make a point of regularly sauntering through camp. Ignorant tourists had, over the years, fed some animals and the baboons, particularly, became a menace – aggressive, adept at stealing food if you turned your back for a second, and even able to open zips on unguarded tents.

On one occasion a lone male bounded on to the tailgate of my 4WD, snatching a packet of biscuits from a food box in its jaws, and sprinted off – all in a matter of seconds whilst myself and a companion were a few steps away at the front of the vehicle. Before leaping up into the back it knew that we'd seen it and were coming back to chase it, but also knew that it was faster and so continued. It was obviously very well practised at this sort of smash-and-grab raid.

Further, Serondela was relatively close to the eastern side of the park, so it added considerably to the density of traffic in the peak dawn and dusk time for game viewing. So for several reasons this site was wisely closed in the late 1990s and superseded by the new Ihaha site.
