English Classification: Indo-European, Germanic, West, English. English is the official language in Botswana, the language of government and schools, although official work is increasingly being carried out in Setswana (Tswana). Afrikaans Classification: Indo-European, Germanic, West; Low Saxon-Low Franconian, Low Franconian. There are 20,000 people in Botswana whose native tongue is Afrikaans, mainly on the commercial farms in the Ghanzi District – however many of the white community who have close links with South Africa can communicate in Afrikaans.
