Tswana Classification: Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, S, Sotho-Tswana (S.30), Tswana. Around 70% of the population speak Tswana (also known as Setswana). Some official business is conducted in Tswana, the media often use English and Tswana interchangeably, and it's a lingua franca between different citizens who don't speak English.
Tswapong Classification: Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, S, Sotho-Tswana (S.30), Tswapong. Several thousand speakers, in the Central District and Mahalapye Sub-district.
Kagalagadi Classification: Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, S, Sotho-Tswana (S.30), Kgalagadi. Estimated total of about 35,000 speakers in Botswana.
Birwa Classification: Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, S, Sotho-Tswana (S.30), Sotho. Estimated total of about 10,000 speakers in Botswana.
Kalanga Classification: Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, S, Shona (S10). Estimated total of about 160,000 speakers in Botswana.
Ndbele Classification: Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, S, Ngui. Estimated total of about 10,000 speakers in the Northeast District, though this is the main language over the border in Zimbabwe's Matabele Province.
Herero Classification: Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, R, Herero. Estimated total of about 31,000 speakers scattered among other ethnic groups, often having their own area in towns and villages. This is one of Namibia's major ethnic groups.
Yeyi Classification: Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, R, Yeye. Estimated total of about 27,000 speakers in Botswana, with probably another 20,000 ethnic Bayeyi who do not actually speak Yeyi.
Mbukushu Classification: Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, K, Kwangwa. Estimated total of about 12,000 speakers in Botswana, located in the Northwest District, especially in Gomare, and in the villages to the north of there, and in the Okavango Delta.
Subiya Classification: Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, K, Subia (L50). Estimated total of about 12,000 speakers in Botswana, mostly living in the Northwest and Chobe Districts.
