Getting there

The easiest way is to follow the directions to Nxai by turning off the main Maun-Nata road at (GPS:NXAI01), which is well signposted to Nxai. After heading north for 18km, you'll find a track off to the east at (GPS: NXAI02).

When I last drove this way there was the rusting shell of a burnt-out VW combi a short way along this track. Either grass seeds had clogged the radiator to overheating, or the sheer effort of the deep sand here had simply been too much for it. This track splits very soon, after about 0.9km, and both roads lead to the baobabs.

Dry season route
The right fork heads almost directly for Baines' Baobabs (GPS: BAINES). It is the more direct route, but it crosses the surface of the pans, so do not try this unless you know what you're doing and are sure they will be dry. (It should be fine after about August, though don't take this as a guarantee!)

Wet season route
Taking the left fork is more reliable if you're travelling earlier in the year, as it bends around slightly to the north, taking about 14.4km to reach a crossroads at (GPS:NXAI04). Here you meet the old road between Maun and Nata; this is about 3.6km from the trees themselves. There's a network of small tracks around here, so head straight and then look for tracks off to the right, or turn right and find a track to your left – you can't miss them (GPS: BAINES).
