Getting there & away

You'd normally approach the Linyanti Campsite from Savuti. To get on to the right track, drive over the old bridge over the Savuti Channel (or what's left of it) and onto its north bank, and then turn left. Thus you pass the campsite on the other side of the channel on your left, whilst heading northwest. Ignoring various right turns, you'll approach a T-junction within a few kilometres, and take a left heading westwards. This crosses the sand ridge (though you may not notice this!) and about 5km later there are two left turnings. Ignore these. Follow the road around to the right, heading in a more northerly direction.

The first 10km of this drive is easy. It's mostly a hard, fast track that's marked clearly on Veronica Roodt's Chobe map. However, after this there's about 30km of trickier driving – very deep sand and tougher going. The scenery is gently rolling dunes, with many flatter areas of low mopane. Visiting last in October, I found large numbers of elephants on the road north. Towards the river there was also a pall of dust-and-wood-smoke hanging over the woods near the river, and a tremendous amount of fine, grey dust in the air. Some of this was clearly coming from fires raging across the river in Namibia.
