What to see & do

Game viewing and birdwatching are the main activities here; walking and night drives are not allowed in Chobe. Most visitors explore along the floodplains beside the river; this is relatively easy game viewing even without a guide.

If you're driving yourself though and have a little time to spare, don't ignore the roads away from the river on the western side of this riverfront section, particularly the Kaswabenga and Simwanza Valley roads, as well as the fire-breaks marked on Veronica Roodt's maps of Chobe. The landscape here is very different from anything else you're likely to see in Chobe. It's broken country with rocky hillsides and gullies; classic leopard country. Driving around here in October, you'll often find surprisingly good concentrations of game, despite its apparent distance from the river. This is because the game will often rest in the shade of the forest on its way to and from the river.
