Workforce

In 1995, the total workforce in Botswana stood at 235,000. Industrial relations are good, with virtually no worker unrest or strikes. The overall rate of literacy in the country is 74%, a direct result of the financial success of the mining industry to the country’s economy. In 2000, Botswana’s GDP was some US$10.4 billion, representing a growth rate that year of 6%. At US$6,600, GDP per capita was the highest in Africa, with mining accounting for 36%. The minimum wage is P600 (about US$105) per month, with an average annual income of US$2,800. Nevertheless, while the rate of unemployment is officially said to be 19%, unofficial figures place it at nearer 40%, and in 2000 some 47% of the population was said to be below the poverty line.
