What to see and do
Water activitiesThe sweeping cape on which Nungwi is sited is surrounded by sparkling, warm, turquoise seas, making it a perfect spot to engage in countless water activities. On the west side of the peninsula, especially on South Beach, locals offer simple boat rides, Mnemba picnic excursions, sunset booze cruises and snorkelling trips. Prices are all very similar; quality is variable. Take other travellers' word-of-mouth advice seriously when deciding who is currently offering the best trip. DivingThe diving here is good and especially popular here in Nungwi. FishingNungwi's proximity to some of Africa's best deep-sea fishing offers serious anglers outstanding fishing opportunities. SailingIf sailing appeals, it is possible to hire a catamaran and sail to Mafia and Pamba. Kite-surfing In recent years, kiting has grown in general popularity and Nungwi is no exception. Dhow-building and harbour activity As well as being a tourist destination, Nungwi is also the centre of Zanzibar's traditional dhow-building industry. Turtle sanctuariesHawksbill turtles have traditionally been hunted around Zanzibar for their attractive shells, and green turtles for their meat. For this reason there are two sanctuaries in Nungwi that work towards protecting them.
