Getting there & away

Years ago, it used to be possible to fly here; the old San-Ta-Wani airstrip is found at n STWAIR 19°30.820’S, 23°37.700’E. That’s about 10km due south of South Gate, in NG33. However, this strip is currently out of action, and needs upgrading – so for now the only access to NG34 and Starling’s Camp is by vehicle.
It takes about two hours to drive from Maun. First follow the directions for Moremi (see pages 179–80) through Shorobe, and head right up to South Gate. Within sight of the gate, about 500m from it, there’s a concrete plinth just where you turn left, to drive roughly southwest down Moremi’s cut-line. (That is the straight line of cleared vegetation that separates the park from the private reserve.)
From there it’s a straight 10.5km until the cut line turns right. Follow this for a further 7.9km until you reach a junction (GPS: STARTU 19°31.599’S, 23°31.987’E). Here you’ve effectively reached the edge of the riverine forest beside the Gomoti River, and you turn to head roughly southeast and to shadow the river. About 2.5km along here is the old site of Gomoti Camp (GPS: GOMOTI 19°32.424’S, 23°33.174’E), around which are various confusing tracks.
Ignoring all of those, about 6.1km past STARTU junction you’ll reach Starling’s Camp (GPS: STARLI 19°33.330’S, 23°34.134’E). Expect to have a number of game-viewing tracks branching off to confuse you when you’re on the last section of this trip, beside the river, but follow your nose (and your GPS); it’s not difficult to find.
This route requires a 4WD, but isn’t difficult and should be accessible all year round. However, if you haven’t got your own vehicle then Capricorn’s road transfers are very reasonable indeed at US$50 per person return from Maun (for a minimum of two people).
