Birdlife

A recent survey counted about 386 species in this immediate area. In general, Sandibe is a better location for waterbirds. Along with many more common species, Okavango ‘specials’ like the Pel’s fishing owl, slaty egret (thought to be the world’s rarest heron), black coucal and black egret have been recorded here.
Chitabe has a wider variation of dry-country birds, with its most common raptor being the bateleur eagle, though there are also good numbers of many other eagles including martial, brown snake, black snake, tawny and western banded snake eagles. Marsh harriers are found in the wetter areas, along with the inevitable fish eagles and even the uncommon migrant European marsh harriers. Look out for bat-hawks in the late evening. Less spectacular, though almost equally uncommon, brown firefinches can certainly be found here.
